AIR SEAL YOUR HOME FOR IMPROVED EFFICIENCY!
How many times did your mama have to yell at you to shut that door? She may have even informed you that she wasn’t paying to cool down all of Louisiana. That’s because everyone knows that leaving a door or window open while an air conditioner is running is just a waste of energy and money!
What you may not know is that all of the small air leaks that are hidden in the nooks and crannies of your home add up to be equivalent of leaving that front door wide open!
Sunlight Contractors can help you identify air leaks in your home with our blower door test and home energy audit. We can quantify exactly how much air is leaking out of your house and pinpoint the location of those leaks. When we’ve found all them, we can seal them up whether they’re in your ducts, around your windows and doors, in walls and attic floors, or elsewhere in your home. Recessed light fixtures are among the most common air leak offenders, and we can seal those just as safely and efficiently as all the others.
Once your home is air sealed, those rooms that are stifling in the summer due to hot air infiltration will be cool. Rooms that are chilly and full of drafts in the winter because of cold air infiltration will be toasty warm. Think of the energy and money you’ll save. Wouldn’t mama be proud!
ELIMINATE THE STACK EFFECT AND SAVE MONEY!
When warm air in your house rises, it moves up through the attic and pushes through any cracks and gaps in your home. As it is lost through external air leakage, new air is pulled in from your home’s crawl space, basement, and other outdoor areas.
When that happens, your HVAC system has to start all over again, heating or cooling outdoor air continuously to meet your indoor comfort needs. This stack effect means that your HVAC unit has to work harder, which costs you more money. With a proper air seal and an elimination of the stack effect, once air is heated or cooled, it stays in place, which means your HVAC can take a break.
For most air sealing tasks, we recommend two-part spray foam insulation. The mixture leaves the dispenser in liquid form, but it expands rapidly to fill and adhere inside cracks and gaps. As it cures, the foam will create a barrier that is both airtight and functional as insulation.
By having your home air sealed professionally, you can reduce heating and cooling utility bills by 20% or more, and air sealing is a once in a lifetime repair. Once your home is sealed, it stays sealed. You can sit back in comfort and enjoy the money you’re saving!
Our technicians can perform a second blower door test when the air sealing work is done so that you can see your evidence of lower leakage right away, confirming that you have a more airtight home. We’re confident that you’ll be pleased with your enhanced energy performance, greater comfort, and lasting savings on your heating and cooling bills.
WHERE DO ALL THOSE AIR LEAKS COME FROM ANYWAY?
Air leaks are a natural byproduct of the construction process as your house is being assembled. Electricians, HVAC contractors, and plumbers create them as they drill channels for wires, ductwork, water lines, and waste pipes that have to be run throughout the house. They just can’t help it.
In addition, joints in your home can contribute to air leakage. Even if a joint is airtight when it’s first installed, over time wood shrinks, materials expand and contract, and the airtight seal of connections deteriorate.
While the holes that are created don’t weaken your home’s structure, they do cause air leaks. Some are nearly invisible leaks, like the ones around electrical outlets in exterior walls. Other can be quite large, like the ones created by well-meaning plumbers as they install pipes.
All of these can be sealed to conserve energy and save you money.
AIR SEAL BEFORE YOU INSULATE!
If you find dirt stains on your fiberglass insulation, assume that you have air leakages. These stains indicate that the insulation is merely serving as a filter, trapping dirt and dust as it travels between the interior and exterior of your home.
When you insulate without air sealing your home, the air leaks right through the insulation because many types of insulation do not stop air flow. Worse still, those air leaks become harder to reach thanks to the layers of insulation. Air sealing should always be done before insulation is installed! Fortunately, Sunlight Contractors provide both air sealing and insulation services.

Why Install Spray Foam Insulation?
Air moves in and out of a home through every hole, crack, and crevice. Roughly one-third of air infiltrates through walls, ceilings and floors. Adding an advanced insulation system is necessary to achieve optimal building performance. Spray Foam is that advanced insulation system.
Spray foam insulation can maximize a homeowner's investment by sealing the building envelope to stop conditioned indoor air from escaping and prevent unconditioned air from entering a home.
Air exchange in and out of a home is a leading cause of escalated energy bills. The mechanical systems that heat and cool buildings are continuously operating; reducing extreme temperature variations saves on the overuse of mechanical systems and leads to lower energy bills.
